New York premier of the Rinde Eckert's Orpheus X (2007 Pulitzer finalist), directed by Robert Woodruff and designed by acclaimed video artist Denise Marika. Eckert–a composer, writer, singer, actor, and movement artist–conceives and writes both the music and libretto for this retelling of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. In this version Orpheus (Eckert) is a rock star, an idol who amazes all not with a legendary lyre but with an electric guitar. Unlike the hero of the source material, he's mourning not the death of his wife but that of a total stranger--a poet named Eurydice--who dies in his arms after being struck by a cab in which Orpheus was riding. This fluke of fate shatters his splendid life. Suddenly burdened by this strange loss, he becomes obsessed with Eurydice's memory and seeks to retrieve her from the underworld.
Orpheus X is "a meditative piece that is both artful and accessible" (Variety) and should appeal to a wide audience.
