Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composer
based on novel by Aleksandr Pushkin
This revival of Robert Carsen's 1997 production of Tchaikovsky's opera--or “lyric scenes,” as Tchaikovsky preferred to call his 1878 adaptation of Pushkin’s poem--stars the "vocally blazing and dramatically shattering" soprano, Karita Matilla as Tatiana, who develops from young girl to experienced woman over the course of this lush romantic masterpiece. The challenges of the title role will be met by Thomas Hampson as the nobleman whose aristocratic façade is pierced by love too late.
